Simon’s second birthday was at the end of July. I took pictures most of the day, per tradition, and love to look at these and see his busy little self from morning to night. He woke up early, as is his wont, and he and I headed to the kitchen for breakfast, because pretty nearly every morning the first thing he says in his raspy baby voice is, “Hun-greeeee.” He played with the balloon Grace left for him in his chair as a birthday present, while I flipped pancakes and set the table. We spent the morning at the pool, where two wild boys were far too busy risking their lives in the name of fun, for me to take even a quick picture with my phone. Nap time was long, having played swam hard, and then we got busy preparing to celebrate with friends and cupcakes on our front porch.
God knew how much we needed you. All the overwhelmed, “what were we thinking?” feelings I had leading up to your birth, and in the crazy year that followed, have been pushed aside by the sweet joy of you. You are our sunshine, sweet boy.
You love to read. Love animals, and especially love balls. You know every kind – baseball, basketball, football – except a soccer ball, which you still call a baseball. You love to fill your hands with as many treasures as you can. A regular hoarder, really. ;) And often, I will come into your room after you have fallen asleep, to find you have brought every stuffed animal and three dozen books into your crib.
Ralphie. Your big brother. You two have become rather inseparable. Doing everything together, and searching for the other when separated. As he has learned to be kinder, you have gone above and beyond to show kindness in return. If he asks for the toy you are playing with, you almost always surrender it without hesitation.
All you said you wanted for your birthday was a “schooo bus,” so we broke the bank and let Ralphie have the pleasure of giving you a $6 metal bus. You slept with it for days. You are delighted with little things, and always eager to learn and be taught. Your teachable spirit is one of my favorite things about you.
For all your sweetness, you are still pretty serious. Taking everything in with calm reserve. Eager, and even a little dare devil, once you know what’s up. You have this little hop-run-skip that makes my heart ache, because it’s so adorable.
Happy Birthday, baby boy. If the first month has been any picture of the next eleven, this year is going to be a great one for you. Shine bright, sweet boy, you are loved!
